
Andrea wants to reduce health disparities and provide health services to underserved communities. She is an active member of the UC Berkeley SAGE Scholars Program, which assists in improving her communication, leadership, and professional skills. Through the program, she has acquired the skills necessary to be a leader and advocate for underrepresented communities. Andrea’s strong work ethic is demonstrated by her commitment to getting the job done.
She is a firm believer of equal healthcare accessibility; she plans to dedicate her life to ensuring that people in disadvantaged communities receive proper treatment. As a current undergraduate student at UC Berkeley, Andrea is majoring in American Studies with an emphasis on nutrition in the community. Andrea created her major by fusing her interest in nutrition and public health, which exemplifies her out of the box thinking and adaptation to change. Her interest in nutrition and public health sparked while interning at UCSF’s Center for Health and Community (CHC). Because of Andrea’s exceptional work as an intern, she was hired as a Research Assistant at the CHC and currently works on the Maternal Adiposity, Metabolism and Stress (MAMAS) Study. The MAMAS Study enrolls low-income, overweight pregnant women in a stress reduction program in hopes of assisting the women achieve and maintain healthy weight during their pregnancy. Andrea’s desire to learn more about nutrition directly coincides with her interests in the field of dentistry. She believes that a person’s oral health is greatly dependent on their diet.
In her free time from her rigorous school course load and part-time work, Andrea volunteers her time in her community. She has worked for the USC Mobile Dental Clinic and numerous health fairs. Andrea has also volunteered at the Alameda County Community Food Bank where she sorted, screened, and boxed¬¬ food items for low-income community members.
Andrea’s goal is to receive her dental degree. She wants to practice specifically in underserved areas and provide those communities with affordable and quality health care.
