Mutual understanding can only exist in a world where people stop talking past each other and start talking to each other while engaged in a mutual pursuit of truth and that which is just. True justice exists in acknowledging that sometimes the right thing may not be beneficial to one’s cause, and behaving with honesty, consistency and integrity. This is an ongoing journey which includes pinpointing broken links of communication between people and helping to strengthen the dialogue within disparate groups.

Delorean is planning to attend law school. He is seeking a career in non-profit litigation and public advocacy. He hopes to assist in amplifying the voices of the underrepresented in the political discourse.

Fabian Collazo

Molecular Toxicology & Molecular Environmental Biology | Senior
Fabian’s Resume
Fabian has a passion for learning about the application of science to human health and how medical policy can impact the underserved. His interest in science grew immensely in high school when he participated in an internship at a marine lab where he learned invaluable molecular laboratory techniques. However, as a child to immigrant parents, in a city mainly inhabited with field workers, Fabian was exposed to disparities in health care. Through his background in science and enthusiasm in working with people, Fabian plans to use his skills and knowledge that he gains from SAGE to help advocate for health equality.

While at UC Berkeley, Fabian is studying Molecular Environmental Biology (Human Health emphasis) and Molecular Toxicology. His interests in research and how the environment impacts human health lead him to become an undergraduate researcher in a pesticide chemistry laboratory. Now, due to his experience in research and help from SAGE, Fabian is now a paid intern at Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute working in congenital heart disease.

Fabian is also dedicated to giving back to the community at large. As a peer advisor he is trained in university procedures while learning essential speaking skills in advising students in his college. Fabian also treasures his work at the Berkeley Free Clinic as a member of the Gay Men’s Health Clinic section where he gathers knowledge about non-profit health care and working with a diverse group of clients. Fabian hopes to use his skills in professional leadership learned from SAGE to advance policy for greater access, inclusion and esteem in LGBT health care.

Fabian also advocates for those with mental health issues. When he was Public Relations Coordinator for Active Minds he learned how to communicate on a large scale and spread awareness for an issue that is often ignored. Fabian is also very interested in the impact of cancer on society. Minorities tend to be disproportionally affected by cancer due to higher chemical toxin exposure and lower income. Fabian wants to work with the underserved to better understand health policy and see how to minimize the disparity seen in minorities in cancer screenings and treatments.

Currently, Fabian wants to pursue a PharmD and work in the realm of public health or the pharmaceutical industry.

James O’Malley

Chemistry | Senior
James’ Resume

James is passionate about nanostructure, functional materials, and clean energy solutions. His decision to view the world through the lens of chemistry reflects his ambition to understand the smallest constituents of matter. In the long term, his goal is to apply his chemical understanding to develop sustainable resolutions to the energy crisis facing society. With a top notch education and the support of the SAGE Scholars Program, James aspires to attend graduate school in preparation for a career as a research scientist.

Growing up in rural Wyoming, James was never pushed toward higher education. Self motivation led him to graduate high school with honors and to attend Casper College where he discovered his passion for chemistry and received an AS Chemistry degree with distinction in 2009. He began working in the clean energy field in 2008 at nanoMaterials Discovery Corporation. An internship researching alcohol fuel cells soon blossomed into a full time position. Following the internship, his ambitions have remained clean energy oriented.

James has had several opportunities to demonstrate scientific promise. At nanoMaterials Discovery Corporation, James developed patent-pending, manufacture-scale electrode fabrication processes. Additionally, he developed catalyst synthesis techniques and was active in fuel cell design. James is currently occupied with a student research position at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory where he investigates the fundamental processes taking place in hydrogen fuel cells.

When he’s not busy with his academic course load, James makes the most of his Berkeley education by reading current scientific literature and attending seminars in the college of chemistry to gain a broad sense of the cutting edge of his field. This knowledge will provide scientific inspiration, and allow James to position his future efforts within the scientific discourse.

James intends to pursue a PhD in Chemistry to assist him in realizing his scientific pursuits.

Joshua Nielsen

Political Science & Public Policy | Senior
Joshua’s resume

Joshua is passionate about social injustice. Coming from an underrepresented community and being a former Job Corps student has driven his aspirations to help underserved communities. Joshua seeks to develop new resolutions to decrease the achievement gap across California and mobilize people within the community to step into leadership positions to change the education system from within the political administration, while also doing grass-roots campaigning in underserved neighborhoods.

Joshua is majoring in Political Science, with a minor focus in Public Policy at University of California, Berkeley. He has been empowering the underserved community of San Francisco, including but not limited to the working-class and students, to become more informed citizens on the issues that directly affect them. His drive has paved the way for opportunities in his political organizing for Services Employees International Union (SEIU) 1021, and he has worked to mobilize people to vote on issues that will impact their community for the better.

The most rewarding experience Joshua has tackled is the Achievement Gap faced by City College of San Francisco. Decreasing the Achievement Gap was a two-year struggle during and after his position as City College’s Student Body President. Joshua’s first mark was collaborating with the planning and research department, who disaggregated the student population of 110,000 by ethnicities to distinguish what barriers students faced when transitioning through the college. After discovering the shocking disparities within the student population, Joshua strategized with other students, along with the Board of Trustees to draft a resolution to help student’s have an easier transition through the college. Due to Joshua’s efforts, City College of San Francisco has centralized all student resources in one building as a one-stop center, mandated cultural-awareness trainings for faculty, provided additional intensive Math & English sections so students can realistically complete their pre-requisites within two-years in addition to other methods to decrease the achievement gap. His efforts were recognized in the New York Times.

Joshua’s goal is to obtain a law degree concentrated in Civil Rights to continue his passion to empower underserved communities. Joshua has a strong work ethic and strives to exceed all expectations.

Mathematics | Freshman
Juan’s Resume

Juan’s passion to help and motivate underrepresented communities has led him to pursue a career in Mathematics & Business. Despite being raised in the most underserved and violent rural town predominantly of migrant workers, Juan has chosen a path for himself: the path of education and responsibility. With so many of the negative stereotypes of Latinos in the mainstream media depicting them as gang members, drug dealers, absent fathers, or high school dropouts, it is hard for a young Latino male to imagine what it means to be a man. Juan’s goal is to become a positive Latino role model for those who are in need of guidance.

He has been awarded numerous scholarships for his accomplishments in Mathematics and academics. One of his greatest achievements is being recognized by The Desert Sun newspaper from Coachella Valley, California as the “Valley’s Best and Brightest.”

Juan has successfully implemented his acquired skills into practice by mentoring elementary students who are from misrepresented communities. In doing so, he actively participates in a student-run, non-profit organization to increase the number of Chicano/Latino students in institutions of higher education and provide academic and social support networks in order to maintain academic achievement. He also seeks to develop new resolutions to advocate for students’ rights by empowering the student voice in the UC system-wide, city, state, national, and international levels.

Juan is planning to attend graduate school to earn a Ph.D. in Mathematics. He is currently seeking a career as a Mathematics professor.
