Mentoring Program

Sponsored by

The Gap   Merrill Lynch

This year the SAGE Scholars will be working with The Wall Street Wizards Urban Financial
Literacy Program, which offers a mix of classroom education, hands on “real” money management, and on-site career exposure to a group of urban youth interested in finance.

SAGE Scholars mentor students from similar socio-economic backgrounds to help them succeed. The program encourages SAGE Scholars to apply the leadership, communication, and teamwork skills they learned in workshops, reinforcing these skills so the students become better prepared to transfer these skills to the job. This program also helps recruit future UC students and SAGE Scholars.

The SAGE Scholars Program trains and coaches SAGE Scholars, qualifying them to mentor high school students. By sharing their stories of applying to and attending UC Berkeley, SAGE Scholars guide their mentees in choosing colleges to apply to and completing all the colleges’ pre-application requirements.

Mentors are also available to discuss any other problems the students are willing to share, making the relationships between the mentor and mentee more than academic. By gaining a positive academic role model who has overcome similar challenges and burdens, mentees have someone they can relate to so as to learn the ins and outs regarding academic deadlines, course selections, financial aid, and other school-related issues that are crucial to a student’s success.

The SAGE Scholars Program also periodically hosts on-campus events through the SAGE Mentor Program so that mentees feel more welcome and comfortable at universities like UC Berkeley.

In addition to our mentor/mentee program, the SAGE Scholars Program has a Peer-to-Peer Mentoring Program. SAGE Scholars are matched with a peer mentor so they can effectively enpower each other to attain their academic and professional goals. SAGE Scholars are also matched with a Professional Mentor during their internships who helps guide the students through their academic and professional course work and goals.

All mentors and mentees are provided with education about a variety of careers, resources and financial literacy through events and workshops sponsored by Merrill Lynch and The Gap Foundation.

"I learned how great, confident, courageous, reassuring and trustworthy mymentor is."

"At the ropes course we really bonded and learned to trust each other." (Amanda, Mentor)
