Andrea Akabike

Andrea is a transfer student majoring in American Studies, emphasizing nutrition in underserved communities. She seeks to pursue a career in dentistry. Andrea has excellent time management skills, which she has developed from working two jobs while attending school.

Anurag Pandey

Anurag is majoring in Business Administration with a social entrepreneur career goal. As an immigrant from India, he overcame his fear of learning a new language, becoming proficient and teaching public speaking. He is passionate about his work with Model UN and helping others to learn English as a second language. He also created a student run course on Public Speaking at UC Berkeley so he could encourage others to develop public speaking skills.

Carlos Osuna

Carlos is a third year majoring in American Studies with a concentration in Business and Ethics, as well as an Education minor. He has strong communication skills, which he developed as a Peer Advisor for Residential and Student Service Program. He is also teaching a Decal through Alternative Breaks on Immigration in Arizona. He serves as a Chapter President in a fraternity and he is currently establishing a microfinance club on campus. As a Gates Millennium Scholar, Carlos goal is to pursue a Doctor of Education Leadership (Ed.L.D.). Carlos is presently interning at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

David Aviña-Ramirez

David graduated from Napa Valley College and currently holds an A.S. in Business with a concentration in Management. He is currently studying Economics, and is exploring careers in business. David has been actively involved with his community for over three years and helps underserved youth get into universities. David is presently interning in Finance at Kaiser Permanente.

Delorean Johnson

Delorean is a Political Science major and is passionate about public service. His sales experience has provided him with a proven track record of teamwork, reliability and high-level performance under pressure, which will serve him well in his pursuits to empower the disadvantaged and underprivileged.

Ekaterina Tkachenko

Ekaterina is a transfer student and Chemical Biology major with a passion for Science and Mathematics. Less than four years ago she left Russia to come to the United States, where she has since acquired excellent language skills. Balancing long hours at work with a heavy academic load, she is an expert at time management.

Fabian Collazo

Fabian is a double major in Molecular Toxicology and Molecular Environmental Biology. He is interested in pursuing a career in Research or Pharmacology and has extensive lab experience. Whether he is educating the public on melanoma, mental health issues, natural disaster planning, or first aid and nutrition, Fabian is dedicated to his volunteer work raising health awareness.

James O’Malley

James is a Chemistry major with an interest in fuel cell technologies, nanostructure fabrication techniques, and novel materials development. His passion for Chemistry, hunger for knowledge and self-motivation have already led to multiple promotions while employed at nanoMaterials Discovery Corporation. After graduation he wants to research and develop clean energy applications. James is currently a student researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Joshua Nielsen

Joshua Nielsen is majoring in Political Science with a minor in Public Policy. His goal is to use his education to empower underrepresented communities to claim their rights and be active in the legislative process. As Student Trustee of City College of San Francisco he worked to pass the Student Achievement/Social Equity Resolution. Joshua was accepted into the very competitive School of Public Policy summer research program.

Juan Contreras-Castillo

Juan is an intended Mathematics major. He developed excellent time management skills during high school while balancing his academics, part-time job, and extensive sports and club involvement. He is dedicated to his volunteer work and enjoys using his leadership skills to help others.

Lisa Llewellyn

Lisa is as an English major and writer with excellent communication skills. She enjoys working with people. An expert at time management, Lisa balances a job, school and motherhood and still finds time to volunteer at her daughter’s school. She is also proud to be a role model for her siblings, inspiring them to return to college.

Lonjino Lazcano

Lonjino is a Psychology major with an interest in crime prevention. He has excellent communication skills which he plans to use as a future Prosecutor. His long-term goal is to orchestrate initiatives to decrease poverty and crime. Lonjino is doing an internship with a gang prevention program and continuing his academic research.

Muhammad Memon

Muhammad is an Economics major. While taking economics and accounting classes at community college, he developed a strong interest in business. He has worked full time at Wells Fargo and loves working in a fast-paced environment. He has outstanding references and has been awarded corporate recognition. He has juggled a heavy work load and outstanding academic achievement at the same time. Muhammad speaks 5 languages.

Rondu Gantt

Rondu is pursuing a B.A. in Rhetoric, and wants to understand inequities in meritocratic societies and the role of rhetoric in carving social landscapes. Serendipity, determination, and a good moral compass have led him from New York’s Harlem to Sacramento Community College, and now to UC Berkeley. Rondu is presently doing an internship with Kaiser Permanente.

Saba Haile

Saba is majoring in American Studies. She is interested in a career in business. She founded an organization to help orphanages in Eritrea and is actively involved in Cal’s Black Recruitment and Retention Center and the Haas Undergraduate Black Business Association. She just returned from a semester of studying abroad in Italy and is doing an internship at Goldman Sachs.

Sangam Rawat

Sangam is a transfer student majoring in Mechanical Engineering. He has had a life-long interest in Mathematics, which helped him during his transition from a small town in Nepal to the United States. Working as a tutor and librarian at Chabot Community College, he learned to speak English fluently and developed excellent people skills.

Vaitiari Rodriguez

Vaitiari is a transfer student majoring in Political Science. She is passionate about using her education to fight discrimination and injustices worldwide. She also enjoys teaching others and prides herself on her organizational and problem solving skills. Having left Cuba only four years ago, she is proud to be at UC Berkeley and the first in her family to attend a university.

Verenice Bravo

Verenice is an Integrative Biology major. Throughout her time at Cal she has served low-income communities in both education and promotion of health awareness. She has focused much of her energy in the retention and recruitment of students of color in the sciences through various programs. She is passionate about connecting science to under-served communities and hopes to directly affect their health through her research in regenerative medicine.

Yasmin Bhatti

Yasmin is excited to explore all her future career options. She has experience helping to build schools in Nicaragua. This spurred her desire to help people in developing countries. She served on the Leadership Committee at Juma Ventures and was President of BuildOn.
